Why ‘Rocks’?

St Peter’s RFC have been called the ‘ROCKS’ ever since I can remember. Have you ever asked yourself why?

Short Answer: The ROCKS comes from the biblical quotation Matthew 16:18.

And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Why ‘Keys’?

St Peter’s RFC have always used the emblem of the Crossed Keys. Why?

Short Answer: The KEYS comes from the biblical quotation Matthew 16:19.

And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

Why ‘Emerald Green and Black’?

St.Peter’s RFC have worn the kit of Emerald Green and Black since the 1880’s to the present day. To be precise the club kit colours are generally four-inch emerald green and black hoops. During the late eighties and early nineties attempts at altering the kit to add a bit of  ‘colour’, namely yellow and white, were introduced.

Is it a coincidence that during those years we found ourselves regularly facing demotion? Who knows? Thankfully in recent years, the ‘correct’ club colours have been restored, during which time we have emerged from division four and ended the past few seasons comfortably in the WRU Championship.

Again – who knows? I’m not the superstitious type anyway – touch wood.

It is not generally known exactly why these colours are ‘our’ colours, but this extract may shed a little light.

The choice of the Club Colours was unlikely to have caused much debate since St. Peter’s traditional colour is green. Hence, perhaps influenced by the early Irish immigrants, the colours became emerald green and black and have never altered.
